The end of 1800 in Naples constituted
an awakening spring of activities with regards to cristian
education, even if the political and social situation was more
complex.
Among the big personalities, who they
desire to evangelize and catechize, to assist and educate the people
in life of faith with simple and effecient pastoral instruments, we
can found Madre Giulia Salzano, foundress of the the Catechist
Sisters of the Sacred Heart.
Giulia Salzano was born in Santa Maria
Capua Vetere(Ce) Italy the 13th of October 1846, from Diego, Captain
of the Lancers of Ferdinando I and Adelaide Valentino. Orphan of
father, when she was 4 decided to enter in orphanage of St. Nicholas
La Strada. Graduated in the school of Caserta she received the
diploma as a teacher of primary school in 1865;in the same year she
was called to exercise her profession in Casoria(Naples); We must
remember she was the first teacher in this small rural place, paid
by the municipal goverments.. Her intention was not only to give
education to he children but more further. She started to riunite
them down the stairs in her residence to educate them in faith,
standing with patience and love all her neighbours’ complaints. She
extended the catechetical teaching non only to the children of the
first communion and confermation, but also to the young daughters of
Mary, to the workers, mothers, operators, and soldiers during the
first world war. In 1877 she organized and directed a laboratory in
Casoria for the preparation of sacred dress for the poor church. She
promoted the devotion of Sacred Heart of Jesus and the devotion of
the Holy Rosary, encouraged the devotion in the month of May and
personally preached with more entusiasm in the church of Our Lady of
Mt. Carmel:” Now lets listen the words od Lady Juliet.” This is the
expression of the witnesses who are still alive.
Juliet understand immediately that
there was a need of evangelizzation and who could continue her
catechetical works.” All Casorians must know, love, and serve God»,
so she wrote in one of the letters to Cardinal Sarnelli Archbishop
of Naples.
In 1905 among great difficulties but
with great profetical spirit and with the help of her students
founded the
CONGEREGATION OF THE CATECHIST SISTERS OF THE SACRED
HEART.
She was a model techear and superior
of a new community. She was a mother and an adviser in the residents
of Casoria and they were so appreciated to the works of Lady Juliet
as she was lovingly called.
The activities she dedicated all her
life was the CATECHISM. Mother Giulia at the end of ‘800
anticipated the impulse that the Holy church today have given to he
catechism : in other words to catechize in all levels, in different
class of the society, and different kinds of age ; every day of the
week she was well occupied with different encounters, and when one
of her daughters saw her so much tired they want her to go away,
she immediately answered them repeating this expression:
the catechist
sisters must be always prepared in all time to educate all the
young and ignorants; she must not count her sacrifices that ask this
apostolate, nevertheless must desire to die in the breach, as God’s
will.
she offered
her life to her daughters and to all who knew her, infact in May 16,
1929 the day before her death, at he age of 83 years, she examinized
more than hundred children of the first communion, living the
fullness in her aim : I WILL CATECHIZE
UNTIL I HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF LIFE.
At dawn of May 17, 1929 she gave
completely her heart to the Holy Lord God that leads us to know and
love.
